Hurricane Hazel - A Life With Purpose (2014)

Hazel McCallion

C.M., LL.D. former Mayor - City of Mississauga

A page-turning lively read that begins with the night of the deadly storm Hurricane Hazel in 1954 when Hazel McCallion was a woman working in the private sector.  It was a time when it was a man’s world.  The story then goes back to her early days growing up on the Gaspe Peninsula and moves through her career – including a stint as a professional hockey player – and personal life until she becomes mayor of Mississauga in 1978.  Then the narrative takes us through her 36 years as Mississauga’s mayor.

Hazel McCallion has heard all the nicknames but says her favourite is Hurricane Hazel and that’s why we used it as the title for this best-selling book.  Her 12-consecutive mayoral victories is a record that will stand longer than even Wayne Gretzky’s scoring records.  She was at the helm of a city that began as a collection of villages and farms and ultimately grew into Canada’s sixth-largest city.
